Volkswagen Golf GTI v Golf R

Volkswagen Golf GTI v Golf R

The Volkswagen Golf has long served as one of the most recognizable and bestselling cars the world has ever seen. So much so, that the platform has spawned not one but two performance variants – the Golf GTI, and the Golf R. Not only has it spawned them, but in Canada, the only way to get a Golf is to opt for one of the performance variants – but which to choose?

For its part, the Golf GTI is a certifiable “OG” of the hot hatchback world. It’s always been a great way to get affordable performance and today, that remains the case.

It comes powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine good for 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. That’s a lot of grunt for a compact hatchback that only weighs about 1,300 kilos! All that power gets sent to the front wheels via either a six-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. Some models will also get a limited-slip differential for great pull out of tight corners.

Inside, we find all the great stuff we’ve come to love about the GTI, such as the shift knob with dimples to recall a golf ball (get it?) and optional tartan cloth or leather seating. There’s a whole heck of a lot of fun to be had here.

But, there’s even more fun to be had with the Golf R.

It also gets a 2.0L turbo four, but in this case it’s good for a whopping 315 hp and 310 lb-ft, fed to all four wheels via the same six-speed manual or dual-clutch auto the GTI gets. It’s a smart AWD system that can send power to whichever axle needs it most, and can provide an almost RWD-like feel in some circumstances. The R also looks the business with flared fenders and large wheels plus specialized sports seats.

Either way, you’re in for a treat with these performance Golfs!
